Instagram´s interesting history
I just saw an article about Instagram & its history and honestly it was all new to me, even though im heavy Instagram user nowdays.
So I was posting my holiday pics to IG and wrote about its history instead of local history from Klaipeda,
the place I had my photos from.
I was surprised that many didnt know about IG history either, so I decided to make a post here as well.
Did you know that Instagram was first called Burbn!?! And it was not a photo app in first place.
Burbn was created because an American guy called Kevin Systrom was a fan of Kentucky whiskeys and wanted to have location based drink app.
So he created iPhone app—one driven by the success of networking app Foursquare and named it after the booze – Bourbon.
Burbn let users check in at particular locations, make plans for future check-ins, earn points for hanging out with friends, and post pictures of the meet-ups.
But Burbn was not terribly successful, the app was too complicated.
Systrom, kept tweaking the app, found couple if investors and met also programmer Mike Krieger.
They refocused that app on photo-sharing, which had become a popular feature among Burbn users.
Then they renamed the app Instagram, a portmanteau of ”instant camera” and ”telegram”.
Before calling it Instagram I also heard it was called ”Codename” for awhile.
Making history- first post(s) on Instagram
First Insta pic was posted on July 16th 2010. Do you know what that is??
Many articles says it is that dog photo with Kevins girlfriend toes on the pic too.
On timeline you can see actually two other pics that got posted before that ”famous” dog photo.
Those are slot machine & food pic and then that pic of a dog in Mexico, standing outside the Taco booth.
I Googled stuff too, found a screenshot of those three photos- in that exact order..
But I always like to doublecheck things if possible, so I did go to Kevin Systroms Instagram to do some research and thinking there will be billion of photos but nope: 1515 photos totally.
Then I was so sure all the old posts are deleted, but wrong again! 2010 photos were still there.
So here are screenshots from Google and then from Systroms IG account, so it should be true?!
Although I found this from Quora, to question for first IG pic?!
”So it’s hard to say since IG officially says that the dog picture was the first one.
The first picture shown before the dog picture is of a slot machine (and food).
But the URLs of the pictures indicate that the dog picture was first and that there probably were three pictures taken before the dog picture that have been deleted (just an assumption since I don’t know how IG generates the URLs)”.
But I do wonder why there is one white/empty place on my screenshot and two on the pic I found from Google 🤔
I also heard rumours that there was yet another – real – first pic, posted by Mike Krieger from San Francisco harbour (screenshot below) which was posted before that dog/food/machine?! So which one is it..
Instagram logo
Has changed few times and here is the history of it (pic from 1000logos).
I dont remember seen that first logo ever but I do remember seen that brown camera, even though I didnt start to use Instagram before late 2016- early 2017. But I got to say I prefer the old logo, that is very retro!
Instagram was officially published October 6th 2010 and it was uploaded by 25 000 users right away.
It kept growing fast: with one million registered users in two months, 10 million in a year
and 1 billion as of May 2019.
Instagram was originally distinguished by only allowing content to be framed in a square (1:1) aspect ratio with 640 pixels to match the display width of the iPhone at the time.
The service also added hastags, messaging features, the ability to include multiple images or videos in a single post, and a Stories & Reels features.
On 2012, Facebook, Inc. bought Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock, now its estimated value is $100 billion. That is crazy! Cheers to Instagram!
